As the court battles between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard reach boiling point, the public scrutiny on the celebrity suit and counter-suit continues to intensify. Every little detail of every moment in the proceedings is being scrutinized with a fine tooth comb and being given its own commentary in the court of public opinion. One such instance has even seen Depp become romantically linked with his attorney, Camille Vazquez after the two were apparently spotted being a little too cozy with each other in court. Most of social media also appears to be falling on his side, with most fans seemingly not buying Heard’s version of events.
It is not just fans who are adding fuel to the fire online, with some celebrities contributing to the discourse in subtle ways and others in a more outright manner. One event that seems to have piqued the attention of fans is that Friends star Jennifer Aniston recently followed Depp on Instagram. While the gesture carries no tangible value for the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s court case, it is a significant show of support from a figure who he was once said to be dating. We take a look back at those rumors, to see whether they ever held any water.

The rumors of a purported relationship between Jennifer Aniston and Johnny Depp first surfaced around November 2018. It was a story that would have been quite believable, considering The Morning Show actress had just finalized her divorce to ex-husband Justin Theroux the previous year. Depp, on his part, had not been in any known relationship since his divorce from Amber Heard. According to multiple fringe reports at the time, Aniston was taking the opportunity of her new-found single status to pursue a crush she had long held for Depp. Apparently, she had been ‘putting the word out through a couple of their mutual friends that she’d have been down to have dinner if he was interested.’
“She’s always found him cute. Jen feels Johnny’s had a terrible run of bad luck, and like her, he chose his long-term partners extremely badly,” a source that was widely quoted with the rumors said. The unsubstantiated gossip was shut down pretty quickly thereafter, however, after Aniston’s camp revealed there was nothing to the. No sooner had the rumors about Johnny Depp and Jennifer Aniston being together started circulating, than the actress’ team jumped into action to quash them out of hand.
“The actress isn’t interested in pursuing a romance with Depp, and she hasn’t tried to set up any dates between the two,” a source close to Aniston insisted. “Despite what the so-called source says, Aniston’s reps [can] confirm on her behalf that the report is fiction.” Aniston and her team had also been quite categorical at the time that following her split from Theroux, her primary focus was work. This was at the time when she was filming her role as Audrey Spitz alongside Adam Sandler for the 2019 mystery comedy, Murder Mystery. She was also doubling up as executive producer on the project.
“[Jennifer] isn’t concerned about dating. She is happy to focus on work,” an insider from her camp told People Magazine. “She loves filming with Adam.” The California-born actress was also gearing up to begin production on Apple TV+’s drama series, The Morning Show. A lot of the work that Jennifer Aniston was focused on back in 2018 can now be said to have been successfully completed. A sequel to Murder Mystery is on the way in the coming months, although the original film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
On the other hand, The Morning Show did so well that it was renewed for a second season, and consequently for a third – which is likely to arrive on Apple TV+ at some point in 2023. Aniston also featured in the 2018 comedy film Dumplin’, where she once again also served as executive producer.
With all these accomplishments under her belt, the actress has been on the record saying that she is once again opening up to the possibility of love. “I think it’s time. I think I’m ready to share myself with another,” she said on the Lunch with Bruce podcast late last year.
With everything that is currently going on with Johnny Depp, and given the already tainted history of that link, we can’t have much confidence that he could end up being the lucky guy. Fans are also extremely excited given that Jennifer Aniston recently followed Johnny Depp via Instagram.
